July 5th - the day after Independence Day and the start of the G8 Summit. Those two events are so incongruous that I feel the need to make a larger than usual statement. I've never been known for keeping my opinion to myself, but most of it is bounced off my right-wing friends ... which is like preaching to the choir. My left-wing friends rarely broach the topic of politics in my presence. I can't figure out why. I'm sure some of it stems from the fact that if you actually ask me why I believe as I do, I have legitimate, well-thought out responses. It annoys people when they discover your rebuttal isn't a knee-jerk reaction.
The biggest failing of liberals is the inability to see below the surface ... they mean well, but one has to think through things to find a workable solution. Take the G8 -- does anyone with an IQ over 6 really believe anything good can come from a summit where 99% of the participants are socialist? Factor in socialism involves using other people's money, and the US is the richest country of the 8 ... we can all see where this is going, right?
I'm proud that the US assists so many who are less fortunate than us, but the concept that we should just randomly throw money at impoverished countries is, well, stupid. These countries, of course, will be chosen by our socialist G8 friends, who are blind / morons / being bankrolled [pick at least one] and ignore the fact the dictators ruling these nations will simply take possession of the funds for their own use, as they do with everything else. (Hence the poverty in the first place.) Heaven forbid, however, we should bring up the idea of democracy ... that might lead to (gasp) war!!! And as we all know, war never solved anything except for communism, slavery, facism, nazism ... all harmless little ideologies.
So my prediction is the summit will have much the same outcome as the Kyoto Treaty .. the US will take the more far-seeing approach, and the rest of the countries will sneer at our "selfish, materialistic, war-monger" American attitude. It would be nice to be proven wrong.

I couldn't have said it better myself!
Never stop your preaching to the choirs....you never know who needed a refresher course that day.
The G8 is a joke - esp. in light of Live8. I am proud to say I missed the whole commercial event although I did see the pic of Madonna in her new, charming persona, giving the finger to the camera.
Oh, I get it, she's still a rebel. <eyes rolling>
Best wishes on this venture.
