Anyway, GOP little bro sent me his final English essay. Not only did he do an outstanding job on a topic near and dear to my heart -- illegal immigration -- but his teacher is actually intelligent (or at least open minded) enough to give him a 91 and his compliments ... obviously a rarity in the liberal-infested world of academia.
I'm going to share a few paragraphs from the essay ... first because I'm proud of him but equally, if not more so, because a big sister never tires of embarrassing the little brothers. Nice work G!
There is now proposed legislation to allow illegal immigrants to apply for temporary work permits; after six years, they could be eligible for green cards. They would be required to pay $1,000 fine for being illegal, then another $1,000 prior to receiving their green card (Lowry, 2005). This is supposed to help correct the problem. I suppose if you suddenly change the status from illegal alien to legal immigrant you have, on paper, alleviated the problem. You have not, however, fixed the problem. That kind of solution will only encourage greater numbers of illegal aliens. The message being sent is that even if you come into the United States illegally, you will eventually become legal. They’re not being punished for breaking the law; they are being rewarded for persistence in avoiding it.
The ACLU website says, “the Constitution does not give foreigners the right to enter the U.S. But once here, it protects them from discrimination based on race and national origin and from arbitrary treatment by the government.” What they seem to ignore is the fact that these illegals have broken the law by their very presence.
According to Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), “we can’t deport the millions of illegal workers here in the United States without crippling our economy (Kennedy, 2005).” I believe it is more likely a political issue. Though polls demonstrate the majority of voters are against illegal immigration, politicians seem to ignore this and lean in favor of illegals (Harrop, 2005). George Weissinger points out “…other participants in the general environment, such as politicians and religious groups, have a vested interest in not enforcing interior immigration laws. Such groups stand to receive benefits from a larger alien population--one for votes, the other for potential converts (Weissinger, 2003).”
Happy birthday GWB, and God bless you!
